Ok...so nobody ever wants to go through anything bad, but if/when you do, you want to know that you are in an environment that is clean and filled with professional and NICE people.

I've had a few experiences in Wellington hospital (birth and NICU), Starship (son under care there) Hamilton Hospital (birth), Tauranga Hospital (prenatal care), Waitakare Hospital (emergency) & North Shore hospital (surgery x2) so I have made my way around a LOT!

On Saturday, I came down with the headache from hell. I've never suffered from a migraine, and my empathy towards those who do has just reached a whole new level. By the evening, I had a fever, and by the wee hours of the morning I was vomiting from the pain... For the first time ever, my husband used the Healthline - they were AMAZING, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is confused or wondering if they need further help medically.

They suggested that I needed to go directly to ED, do not pass go, do not collect $200. So, without family around, we dragged (or should I say the DH dragged) the two youngest out of bed (the two oldest are in Oz) and made our way to Auckland hospital.

From beginning to end, the doctors and nurses and quality of care was outstanding. I find illness such a leveller...we are all on equal footing when ill, and it doesn't matter where you've come from, or where you're headed, being sick makes us all so equal. I reminds me of the time I was traveling between the islands and the ferry took six and a half hours and 99% of the passengers were ill. There were people lying on the ground, they ran out of ice, it was horrific. And in that moment, every one was equal. As we moved into calm waters in the last half hour or so, the public persona came on again, and everyone moved forward in their self-assigned roles.

But I digress...much support, nurturing (and drugs) and I'm home again, and expected to be in and out of sleep for the next few days. I've slept twenty hours now, just been up for a shower, and am back in bed with the laptop.

But thanks so much to the amazing staff. You guys make it so much better being ill.

Oh, and another wee note - there was an American doctor, over here for three months and he said that the standard of care compared to his homeland was superior. How about that then??!
