We all know that motherhood is a life changing experience, and many mums fear that motherhood will mean that they will lose a lot of friends...but research involving 4,000 mums has found that the average mum will have 8 new friends by one month after delivery.
The research was conducted by Cancer charity CLIC…

It's around two years ago (maybe three) that I was in a home store, Farmers or the like, with my daughter. In the home section she stops before a iron.
"What's that mummy?"
Ummmm...no. She wasn't kidding. It was quite a wake up call and since then I've been an ironer. As much as possible. Not obsessive, but getting there. I've found it's a great way to get some time on my own. No sticky hands grabbing at me, "careful darling...it's hot!" and a great way to stop the rough-housing of three boys…

I thank you all for sharing your experiences with PND on my last blog post, but of course I couldn't end it there.
I've had many PM's asking about my experiences.
I think the biggest way of coming out of depression is to first acknowledge and accept the situation. I have a fav poem which I will share about the battle if we choose to fight this internal struggle.
The second thing we, no matter where in our life circumstances we may be, is to create an 'ideal'. For me, in the depths of PND I fo…

Pregnant at 21, depression was already a friend of mine. In fact, it had been throughout my teenage years. My pregnancy was something that I look back on with great fondness. I was so excited to be moving on in my life and instantly, upon finding out I was pregnant fell deeply, madly in love with this grow…

I know, it's one of my 'pet' subjects, and I'm returning to it today...the whole recent phenomenon of professional motherhood.
Once upon a time, mother's were given credit for their ability to mother. Then a long came the medicine man, and mum needed help to deliver a baby (with feet in stirrups, and pubic hair shaved) and it wasn't long after that the first of many male experts started teaching women how to mother correctly. Truby King was probably the pioneer.
Now it seems we have a new tren…

Ok...so nobody ever wants to go through anything bad, but if/when you do, you want to know that you are in an environment that is clean and filled with professional and NICE people.
I've had a few experiences in Wellington hospital (birth and NICU), Starship (son under care there) Hamilton Hospital (birth), Tauranga Hospital (prenatal care), Waitakare Hospital (emergency) & North Shore hospital (surgery x2) so I have made my way around a LOT!
On Saturday, I came down with the headache from…

Every so often in life, we meet someone who is different in age and beliefs yet touches us forever just by being who they are.
On Friday I attended the funeral of one such woman. We'd met when I was living in the small town of Waihi and I had gone to interview her for a Home and Garden section of a newspaper. Her garden was magical. She'd created a series of 'rooms', each one designed to give whoever was visiting a different feeling. She was a master gardener and artist. I've yet to find anothe…

I've been thinking a lot about why I personally find it so hard to just 'let go' and why I try my best to raise my kids. Both of my parents worked, and we walked to and from school, let ourselves in, got our own afternoon tea and basically knew how to entertain ourselves.
With my o…

Have you got a mummy uniform?
I have. It's my hair back in a pony tail. It's my jeans, turtle neck in winter and t-shirt in summer. And chuck taylors. It's what I feel comfy in...as a mother.
This morning, as I dropped the kids off to school I noticed that most mums who are 'stay at…

I've been rather clucky for awhile. I think it might be something to do with the fact that so many of my friends are now pregnant or have just had babies and I did it all upside down (in terms of timing).
After solo-mummying it for the first kid, and then three kids in three years after getting married, that was it. Full stop.
But...sheesh...babies are just so cute, aren't they? I just love the age from about eight months to three years when they just look at you so adoringly, their minds full…

It's been many years since I've been up while the sky is still dark. Yes, sprogs are older and I'm taking advantage of every snuggly moment. But this morning, the alarm was set for six (of course i was awake by five), a nice dose of clear eyes and off to the TV3 studios for my inter…

I'm really big on children being able to share their emotions and personalities (and no, this doesn't mean they can be violent or abusive) and as my daughter spent an hour crying yesterday because she wants to be a dog, and one of my sons spent an hour crying b/c his father cut down a tree I'm really beginning to wonder what i'm raising here...
Can my kids BE any different?? I think not!
Number one is down the island with his biological grandmother for the week. He's long-haired and in full pr…

Call me obsessed (which, perhaps i am) with this whole panic pandemic, but the latest talk from mothering communities around the world is the holding of swine 'flu parties.
Ahem. Excuse me?
Similar to the chicken pox parties, the idea is that the kids will get swine 'flu and build up immunity for the second strain which health officials are warning us will be even worse...this was another question in my swine 'flu musings blogs... it seems that the Spanish Flu pandemic which killed millions be…

Last Thurs no. 3 arrived home miserable and I kept him home the following day.
As news continues to leak out about our pandemic, I was wary to send all four of them to school on Monday. Although 3 have mild colds, one has the flu and I figured a) their immunity is low and b) could this be swine flu??!!
After listening to their coughing and sniffling, I made the decision to keep them all home Monday. Indeed.
I called the doctors office around nine to find out what we should do - are all people…

2009 is an interesting – and fantastic time to be a mum. I think we are in the process of witnessing a mother revolution as more women embrace their new role. Historically (think paleolithic times) women, especially mothers were revered. Acknowledged for their life-giving strength they…

I’ve got a wee ‘thing’ about parenting experts. Not them as people per se, but more to do with the idea that we as mums and dads require expert advice to raise our children.
Once upon a time, parents were given credit for knowing how to parent. Communities were actual communities, a…

The Rise of the Mummy Blogs
Unless you’ve never used Google, or ventured far from your inbox, you have bound to come across the word “Blog” on the internet.
The word itself is as common these days as the word cat. It’s infiltrated our vocabularies and our lifestyle so much so that it’s a part of modern life in most parts of the Western World. And often, if you’re a mum, you’ve got a blog. In the mother-shere, mums are doing what they have always done, but now they can do it online, and…
