Absolutely sign them up. They get $1000 which isn't to be sneezed at. You don't even have to contribute after that but you can if you want to. They should be able to take a "contribution holiday" when they start working and there currently isn't any…

Jess, I'm very pleased you've made the appointment. I'm not sure of your age but if you're in your twenties the chances that it is breast cancer are very low. I know a few women with breast cancer and a few that have lumps that have not been cancer.…

I vaccinated apart from the menzb as I felt that one was too new (plus we're in a fairly low risk group for this) and my son had recently had a mild allergic reaction (red whelts) to his first MMR but no problems with follow-ups. I see vaccinations…

We did signing too but not from birth. The daycare centre staff were so impressed that my son seemed so much happier and less frustrated that they started teaching all the children sign language. Can't rate it highly enough. You really only end up n…

Men in the US who have been circumsized might not know what sensations they are missing out on. Who would know? A man who had an adult circumcision wouldn't really be able to say as it seems to be a different operation when you have it done as an ad…

I'm with Kathryn. I didn't change my name when I got married but I did when I had my son. I wanted to have the same surname as him and wanted us all to have the same name. Plus my maiden name was Clark and if I had a dollar for every time I got call…

Congratulations on becoming a Dad. Most of the baby info I got was off the internet but I did find I naturally fell in with the style that is called "attachment parenting". Someone lent me "Babywise" when I had a newborn and that confused me bigtim…

I think anytime is ok. This reminds me of a time when some people on the beach (the only other two people on the beach) asked me and my friend if we could get our kids to keep the noise down as they had a baby asleep in a pram. I was gobsmacked. Kee…

I did a pirate party that didn't cost much. Treasure hunt down at the beach with a filled up box of "treasure" (mainly gold spraypainted stones). We set up a "plank" obsticle course in the garden and used a hose that they had to duck under. I made a…

They love "mainstream" mothers. Sorry that this is going to make things harder for you.

It is dreadful. 125,000 notifications per year is so so sad. If NZ has 4 million, how many are children. Maybe 1 million? so does that mean that 1 child in 10 is being notified to CYFS per year? Or are the multiple notifications for one child. What…

Hi there, I haven't been in this position but just wanted to say that you seem to have a good grasp of what is going on and already know what you should be doing. You are a very good and eloquent writer. Maybe this is an area you could develop as a…

I am finding at this age there is a lot of one upmanship. I guess it used to be "my Dad's stronger than yours" but now it's more likely to be "I'm on level 4". My son talks up (I don't think it's really fibbing) movies that he's supposedly seen (he…

It is still so early for you and at this stage it is hard to do any of those things.....but it will get easier. Some things have to be let slip (housework etc.) or get someone to help you. If you are still losing weight you might want to wait for a…

Oh that is such a worry for you. I hope you have some family support to help you while you go through these tests. She looks so adorable in that photo. Heather

Customer Service 101

While in the supermarket I was excited to see pregnancy tests for sale. Yay I thought. I hate having to ask the pharmacy assistant for one. Are the boxes camoflaged or something? I can never find them on the shelves and end up looking in the vitamins section until I am brave enough to approach an assistant. Anyway, supermarket, great, right next to the lubricant and condoms, perfect positioning. So I popped one in my basket, discretely under the bananas, in case I bump into, I don't know, someon… Continue

I hate "smart casual"

I have to admit I'm not a fashion kind of gal. I buy new shoes when a pair wear out and clothes when the old ones are getting tatty. I have two levels of dress. My "mummy uniform" (borrowing the term thanks M) of jeans, t-shirt, jersey (merino if I want to look a bit dressy) or my Wellington undertaker work look (black trousers, black top, black dress). So when I read something saying "smart casual" I go into a tissy. What does it mean for a woman? Remove my tie? Smart jeans?
And now I get somet… Continue
