Gifted Group

Hey All! I thought I'd set this up to encourage open conversation about our kids that are labelled gifted. It can be a tricky subject to speak out about and equally as tricky to find the right people to ask the questions to!

We've been to a couple of small poppies sessions and really enjoyed them! The teachers had infinite patience...something I run short on some days!!

Hi Sonia,

Hope this makes sense, as it's written with a headcold (mine) and two children (3yrs and 7months) doing vastly different noisy things I need to keep an ear on!

Callum's part of the Small Poppies group, and we think it's great.

I feel it's definitely worth doing, as it extends kids' experiences so much, and introduces them to so many things that they might not otherwise get exposure to at an early age...but it's not done in a "teachy-preachy" way that might put them off (as, let's face it, pre-schoolers tend not to be willing to be lectured - especially bright pre-schoolers!). Plus, it's heaps of fun and so nice to be around mums/dads who have similar challenges in their child-rearing!

I can't write more at the mo, as Callum's come in to ask for my engineering help with his latest train track project...but if I don't post this now I'll forget I'm sure! Feel free to email me if you want me to answer any more questions about our experiences there, however!

Hi Sonia! Well done for getting out there! I don't have any experience with Small Poppies as I now live in Aus and only really found out about it a little bit before we left NZ. I do know people who had their kids involved in it and they spoke very highly of the programs run. Also,it's a great place to meet likeminded parents.....how you will need them!

Genevieve, that's amazing and yes so often all you hear about is the gifted child that goes unrecognised etc or only info on the child, now how they grow up as adults and the trials they go through to get there. I don't think you sound egotistical at all!

Has anyone here heard of or participated in the Tournament of the Minds? It's international and very popular in G&T groups. My little girl has just been invited to participate and we are very excited....finally something she can truly sink her teeth into! If anyone has done this or had kids participate, please share your experiences!

Just been to a Poppy Peek session yesterday, which was okay..we've been 'allowed' lol to join the playgroup. Has anyone had any experience with the Small Poppies program, ie how's it like, has your child benefited etc?

HI, just introducing myself, I really do not want to sound egotistical (so I am sorry if I offend anyone!)

i was labeled gifted when I was 2.

School was horrible, I was bored constantly despite going to a top private school and doing IB instead of NCEA...the only relief was my mother who really motivated me to keep on going!

Just letting you know that your gifted children are going to be a handful if they are anything like me, I am now part of MENSA, and that is a great group if you could get your children tested through them once they are at the right reading level (which could be pretty early for some of you)

If you need any advice on things your kid is going through I could maybe help or get in you touch with the right groups.

This group is just a common place for us to share our resources and ask questions, can be for if you have gifted kids or just want to learn more about it. How you parent you children is entirely up to you!
